Brett has over 30 years of experience in public service, most of it managing organizations providing library services. Most recently, Brett served as the director of the Sonoma County Library in Sonoma, California, and of the Martin County Library in Martin County, Florida.

Prior to those leadership roles, Brett was involved in library management in Oregon, Colorado, and New York. He has the unique perspective of leading public service organizations in multiple states, with different laws and contexts. He has led the development of both strategic and business plans for his agencies, as well as public engagement activities, including the successful passage of a $12 million per year sales tax measure for libraries. He has specific expertise in staff and organizational development as well as intergovernmental shared services. He is an active member of American Library Association and the California Library Association and is the author of ALA Edition’s Adult Programs in the Library.
