Scott has 37 years of public safety experience serving two tours at the helm of the Newport News Fire Department, an all hazards fire/EMS department in Virginia. He started his career as a volunteer firefighter, serving 14 years in his home community, and moved quickly into career service in Newport News where he served for over 32 years. His broad experience includes work as a hazardous materials specialist, a member of the maritime incident response team and emergency medical technician. He moved quickly through the ranks becoming the youngest captain and battalion chief in the department’s history, ultimately rising to the position of chief and coordinator of emergency management. Scott has also been active in the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, including serving on the regional Incident Management Team as an incident commander and on the Area Maritime Security Executive Committee for the Port of Hampton Roads. On a national level as a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Scott served on the Emergency Management Committee and as a team member of the first cohort of the “Go Team.”
